Post-Offer Employment Testing (POET)

Post offer employment testing assessing physical ability for job tasks

Post-Offer Employment Testing (POET)

What Is a POET?

A POET evaluates an applicant’s physical capabilities and compares them directly to the real demands of the job.

Rather than guessing whether someone can safely perform a role, POETs provide measurable data on abilities such as:

Lifting and carrying capacity

Pushing and pulling strength

Grip and pinch strength

Repetitive movement tolerance

Postural endurance (standing, bending, reaching)

Functional mobility and coordination

Cardiovascular response to work tasks

The goal is simple: make sure the employee can safely do the job on day one.

Why Employers Use POETs

POETs are one of the most effective tools for workplace injury prevention. They help companies:

Reduce workers’ compensation claims

Lower injury-related costs

Improve employee retention

Ensure ADA-compliant, job-specific hiring practices

Establish baseline physical data

Increase productivity and job performance

Promote a safer workplace culture

If a company requires a POET for a specific role, all applicants for that role must complete the same test to ensure fairness and compliance.

How the Testing Process Works

POETs are conducted after a conditional offer of employment has been extended.

1. Job Analysis

Before testing, the physical demands of the job are identified, including:

Weight requirements for lifting or carrying

Heights of equipment or materials

Required postures and movements

Frequency and duration of tasks

Force needed to push, pull, grip, or maneuver objects

2. Functional Testing

Applicants perform simulated work tasks that mirror real job duties. Activities are typically repeated to assess consistency and safe maximal effort.

During testing, clinicians monitor safety indicators such as:

Heart rate

Body mechanics

Signs of fatigue or strain

Movement quality

Some employers may also request blood pressure monitoring.

3. Results and Reporting

TheraWest collects objective data and provides a detailed report to the employer or third-party administrator. The hiring organization determines whether the candidate meets the physical requirements of the position.

Applicants are usually not informed of pass/fail status at the appointments.

Who Should Get a POET?

POETs are most commonly used for positions with higher physical demands or injury risk, including:

Construction and skilled trades

Manufacturing and warehouse roles

Healthcare and caregiving

Public safety and emergency services

Transportation and delivery jobs

Any job requiring heavy or repetitive physical work

They can also be used to establish baseline physical abilities for current employees.

What Applicants Should Expect

A POET is not something to fear. It is simply a safe, structured way to demonstrate your ability to perform the job.

Helpful tips:

Wear comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes

Get a good night’s sleep beforehand

Eat normally and stay hydrated

Bring any requested documentation

Perform tasks honestly and to your safe best effort

If you can do the job safely, the test allows you to show that.
